MUN Lab Field Trip Opportunities

The Faculty of Science welcomes field trip visits to MUN labs in the departments of Biochemistry, Biology and Chemistry focusing on Grade 8 and High School student groups within the Avalon region during the Spring of the year. The FOSTER Science field trip opportunities have been designed to enhance and support scientific teaching and learning within local classrooms using hands-on activities that align with curriculum outcomes as outlined on the NLESD webpage. The exact dates available for a specific Spring session are dependent on the Fall and Summer university semester end and start dates, respectively, in a given year.

Student intensively focused on chloroplast extraction in Biology.

The objective of the field trip visits is to couple a unique experiential learning opportunity with the classroom learning that has already taken place and enhance the curricula concepts of focus. The students are challenged with scientific exploration exercises and interactive demonstrations while interacting with undergraduate and graduate students under the direction of seasoned laboratory instructors and professors. The departments within the Faculty of Science taking part in the FOSTER Science program aspire to make this opportunity available to as many teachers and students within the Avalon region as possible by offering the program free of charge. Schools, however, are responsible for transportation to and from the university.

Junior High school Lab visits to the departments of Biology, Biochemistry and Chemistry were the feature of a MUN Gazette article published in 2019.

Junior High School (Grade 8) Field Trip Opportunities

The FOSTER Science field trip opportunities for Junior High school groups are designed as 2 ½ hour visits (including arrival and departure) with 50 students each visiting either the departments of Biochemistry, Biology and Chemistry, for a maximum of 150 students taking part in the program per day. For schools with a capacity greater than 150 interested students, it is suggested that the appropriate number of sessions be booked on more than one day in order to accommodate all students. Furthermore, prior to arrival on field trip day, it is recommended that the department of choice visited by a particular group of 50 students be determined by the school’s field trip coordinator.

The dates, times and registration details for the Spring 2022 session will be posted several months prior to the planned session.

Topic Focus and Activities per Department

Biochemistry - Focuses on hands-on extraction of DNA/protein from foods and measuring protein activity; interactive demonstrations will also support topics of interest highlighted in the Junior High curricula.

Biology - Students will apply techniques involved in the isolation of chloroplasts from plants and apply the skills required for testing it for photosynthesis properties

Chemistry - Students perform an experiment involving the dissolution of aluminum foil in a solution and the resultant precipitation and isolation of copper metal from the solution; interactive demonstrations will also support topics of interest highlighted in the Junior High curricula.

Field Trips Requirements
  1. All FOSTER Science field trip lab visits are free of charge. However, schools must provide their own transportation to and from the university for the field trip visit.
  2. Schools must provide a minimum of one chaperone for each 25 student group.
  3. All safety protocols (provided by the FOSTER Science Program) must be reviewed with students prior to MUN lab visits.
  4. All students must provide a parent signed permission slip which includes student written agreement to adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
  5. For further details, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section of our webpage.

High School Field Trip Opportunities

(Students should have completed or be currently enrolled in the third level courses for the lab departments of interest).

The FOSTER Science field trip opportunities for High School groups are designed as a full day experience arranged for individual groups of approximately 25 students in the department of interest, Biochemistry, Biology or Chemistry. The visits are designed to include hands-on exploratory activities and interactive demonstrations to support core curriculum outcomes, tours and highlights of the science facilities at MUN as well as an information and advising session for registration/future plans for careers in science.

The dates, times and the registration process for the Spring 2022 session will be posted several months prior to the planned session.

Lab Field Trip Registration Information

Please note that registration will be based on 25 student groups in one of the departments of Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry. Following registration, contact teachers will receive a short “Safety Procedures and Protocols” presentation from our office which must be reviewed with all students prior to their field trip attendance. Furthermore, each student and their parents must complete a permission slip acknowledging that students have attended the “Safety Protocols and Procedures” presentation with their teachers and that parents are aware and signed the waiver for the student visit to MUN labs. Any students who have not completed the Permission and Wavier Form prior to the date indicated by the FOSTER Science program coordinators will not be able to take part in the MUN lab field trip visit.

Please note that each registration is based on a 25 student group with each department of the three departments taking part in the program able to accommodate 2 student groups per day for a maximum of 150 students per day. For schools planning to visit with more than 150 students, registrations for more than one day will be required.
Important Note: For schools outside the greater metropolitan area and with lengthy travel times, arrival and departure times that vary from that indicated above are possible upon contact with the coordinators of the FOSTER Science program at sciencefieldtrips@mun.ca.

Student Permission and Waiver Forms

Note that each student and their parent will be required to complete and submit the Permission and Waiver Form prior to the date indicated by the FOSTER Science program coordinators.
