Research Milestones and Updates

The Strategic Research Intensity Plan 2014-2020 reflects a synergistic and integrated approach for strengthening all aspects of research at Memorial University, including scholarship and creative activities, as well as the translation of knowledge into products, practices and policies, and other forms of community engagement.

Here are some recent developments and milestones associated with achieving those goals:

  • Seed, Bridge and Multidisciplinary Fund will seed new, "early days" innovative research projects, provide valuable bridge funding for researchers between grants, and encourage the development of multidisciplinary research activities which align with the priority research themes of the Research Strategy Framework. In 2016-17, 62 applications were received.

  • Research MUCEPs began in January 2015. In 2016-17, 87 research-based positions were supported through the Memorial Undergraduate Career Experience Program (MUCEP). The program supports greater opportunities for undergraduate training and engagement and simulates a heightened interest of graduate studies and research careers among undergrads. The Research MUCEPs supports SRIP's goal of providing undergraduate research incentive funding.

  • Undergraduate students can apply for 13- and 16-week summer research internships. The University Student Summer Internship Program (USSIP) provides students with the opportunity to carry out a 13- or 16-week research/development work term under the supervision of a full-time faculty member or regular term appointee. The program will provide $4,500 with the remaining to be contributed by the supervisor. In 2016-17, 10 internships were awarded.
