Animal Care Services (ACS)
|ACS has returned to full staffing as of June 29, 2020. Technical staff are in the facilities daily while management and veterinary staff are working from home where possible. All staff can be reached by email, as was done prior to the pandemic. Animal orders can be placed provided researchers have a valid research exemption granted from the dean or department head, as required. Find the latest updates here.|
The Animal Care Services provides Memorial University's clinical, operational and regulatory oversight for the care and use of animals used in medical and scientific research and teaching programs.
The veterinary professionals and technical team work with the Institutional Animal Care Committee, faculty and students to provide the highest standard of care. Excellence in animal care is a requirement for excellence in research and teaching and to promote the 3R's of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement.
The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) has accredited Memorial University with a certificate of Good Animal Practice. Oversight for the animal care and use program is governed by federal and provincial laws, guidelines, memoranda of understanding and the Canadian Council on Animal Care, whose standards and guidelines that are recognized by public and private institutions across the country.
