Information for education Students
Newfoundland's Ministry of Education has recently introduced a new curriculum in religion. One of the goals of the new curriculum is to introduce students to the wide variety of religions found around the globe. It would be beneficial, therefore, for teachers of religion to have a broad background in the world's religious traditions. To help meet this need the Department of Religious Studies offers courses in many of the world's religions, including:
The Department also offers a first year introduction to World Religions (Rels 1000). This course is a fantastic resource for anyone planning on a career in religious education.
The Primary/Elementary Programme
Religious Studies qualifies as a Focus Area in the Primary/Elementary programme. Students wishing to focus in Religious Studies are required to attain eighteen credit hours in Religious Studies courses, including:
- RELS 1000: The Religions of the World
- Three credit hours from 2013, 2130, 2140, 2330, 2340
- Three credit hours from 2400, 2410, 2420, 2425, 2430
- Three credit hours from 2350, 2610, 2810, 2811, 2812, 2830
- Six credit hours at the 3000 level or above.
The Intermediate/Secondary Programme
Religious Studies qualifies as a Second Teachable Area in the Intermediate/Secondary programme. Students wishing to complete a Second Teachable in Religious Studies are required to take twenty-four credit hours in Religious Studies courses during their first Bachelor's degree. This number of credit hours also qualifies as a Minor within the Bachelor of Arts Programme. Students may want to take advantage of the situation by formally declaring Religious Studies as their Minor.
Religious Studies does not qualify as a First Teachable Area in the Intermediate/Secondary programme.
