Getting to Know More About Ocean Sciences Graduate Students

What do you study at Memorial?
I am studying the rate of rapid evolution an introduced Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations, genetically and physically, and making comparisons with it's founder population
Who is your supervisor?
I'm co-supervised by Dr. Ian Fleming (OSC) and Dr. Ian Bradbury (DFO). They are both awesome, extremely knowledgeable guys, so I'm very happy I have them as supervisors!
What is your favorite aspect of your studies?
Right now, I'm really enjoying the field and lab work! I loved catching the parr (even though I fell in!) and making the crosses. I'm excited for my project to unfold, I think it will be very interesting, but a lot of work!
Why did you choose to study at Memorial?
I've always had a soft spot for Newfoundland. I've visited many times growing up. I love the coastal life style and the Atlantic Canadian culture, so it was the perfect spot!
Where are you from?
I'm originally from a small town on the South Shore of Nova Scotia called Bridgewater, but lived in Halifax for 5 years before coming to MUN
What did you do before coming to MUN?
I did my undergrad at Dalhousie University and graduated with a BSc. Hons. Marine Biology Co-op degree in May 2013.
What are you interests outside of school?
Rugby! I also love travelling and seeing new parts of the world. I'm an animal lover, so I enjoy interacting with them any way I can. Also, I'm a bit of a movie buff, cook aholic and a budding tea addict.
What's your idea of agood time?
Right now, I really enjoy having low key nights with friends and having a couple of drinks. Trivia nights at Bitter's is always fun!
Tell us something interesting about you?
I lived on a beach (literally, the water was maybe 30 metres away) 9 km away from the nearest town in Costa Rica for three months doing Sea turtle research!
