Call for Papers

Newfoundland and Labrador Studies journal is interested in producing a thematic issue on the topic of foodways (i.e. the intersection of food and culture). Foodways is a lens to study a wide range of topics and themes at the heart of human existence, offering a critical framework to examine the various traditions and cultural identities of Newfoundland and Labrador.

We welcome papers from across disciplines and methodologies, including ethnographic, cultural, and historical perspectives, material culture, Indigenous studies, belief studies, literary studies, environmental studies, and nutrition — the study of foodways is interdisciplinary and connects us all.

We hope to receive papers that inform and challenge our understandings of Newfoundland and Labrador foodways, examples include hunting, fishing, and foraging across the province; Indigenous foodways; the occupational folklife of workers in jobs that relate to food; the role of food in the heritage and tourism industries; food insecurity; everyday and holiday food customs; and the myriad of food offerings at farmers’ markets.

Our goal for this issue is to highlight not only what is on our tables, but also the journey of how the food got there, and the many meanings foodways has for us all — from individual to individual, from group to group, from local to global perspectives.

Expressions of interest should be sent to guest editor Jillian Gould (jgould@mun.ca) or NLS editor Barry Gaulton (bgaulton@mun.ca) no later than April 15th, 2024.  Papers are due by October 2024 and will undergo a double-blind peer review process. Accepted papers will be published in Open Access in Newfoundland and Labrador Studies Vol 40 No. 2 (2025).
