Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Silvia - built in 1909 at Danzig, official number 145944, 3589 gross tons, owned by the New York, Newfoundland & Halifax Steamship Co. Ltd. and registered at Liverpool from 1922-1928. Sold to the Bermuda & West Indies Steamship Co., Ltd., and registered at Hamilton, Bermuda from 1929-1935. Sold to Stuart T. Williamson of Hong Kong and registered at Hong Kong from 1935-1937. Sold to the Douglas Steam Ship Co., Ltd., renamed the Haitan and registered in Hong Kong from 1937-1950. The vessel was scrapped in 1950.

Alec C. Gruchy was a Bowring Brothers' insurance agent in Pouch Cove. He went to the ice on the Silvia in 1928 at the invitation of Bowring Brothers.
Scope and Content: Photograph of the S.S. Silvia in 1928. Collection also includes a cardboard sign from Bowrings Insurance advertising house fire insurance rates with J. and A. Grouchy as the agents at Pouch Cove.
