Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Jane (Ryan) Bartlett was born at Adam's Cove, Conception Bay, Newfoundland on January 1, 1900, daughter of Sarah and John Ryan. She completed teacher training and taught at Little Heart's Ease, La Poile, and Musgrave Harbour, before moving to Rattling Brook in 1922. She married Frank Bartlett in 1924 and together they became general merchants in 1926. Between 1933 and 1940, they participated with the Commission of Government in a coastal schooner building program resulting in the building and marketing of 10 schooners which were sold to other fish merchants throughout Newfoundland. They sold their business in 1949 and moved to St. John's, but returned to Rattling Brook three years later, fulfilling contracts with the British Government to provide wooden pit props for the coal mining industry in Britain. Jane and Frank remained in Rattling Brook until the 1990s, when Frank died at the age of 87. Jane died October 14, 1997, leaving to mourn four sons and one daughter.
