Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Research project of the Maritime History Group, 1976-1982 The Atlantic Canada Shipping Project was a major research project undertaken by the Maritime History Group over a six year period from 1976-1982. Funding for the project was provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Memorial University. The objective of the project was to study, document and explain the rise and fall of Atlantic Canadian shipping in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, through the use of the official documents of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen. The project sought to study shipping data from the major ports in Atlantic Canada. The ports selected were: St. John's, Newfoundland; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax, Yarmouth, Windsor, Pictou, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Cape Breton; Saint John, Richibucto and Miramichi, New Brunswick. Information contained in the Board of Trade series Certificates of Vessel Registry and the Agreements and Account of Crew provided information to create computer data banks which are now part of the records of the project. In addition to these two major records series, data was also collected from a number of other sources, to provide information on freight rates, shipowners and their investment patterns, legislation, world shipping, trade patterns and commodity flows. A large data bank was assembled on what became known as the landward side of operations, and included data on business and industry directly affected by shipbuilding and shipping throughout the Maritime provinces of Canada. This material is still in the hands of its creator, Gerald Panting.
Scope and Content: Research material consisting of computer tapes and printouts of the certificates of registry for Atlantic Canadian ports, for vessels registered from 1812-1940, and crew agreements, from 1863-1939, of the vessels owned and operated in Atlantic Canada.
