Biography/Admin History: The topsail schooner "Little Gem", official number 56618, gross tonnage 96, was built in Dartmouth, Devon, England in 1867, and registered in nearby Brixham to Jasper Bartlett. The vessel was owned by William Penny in 1875 and E Roberts the following year, both also of Brixham. The "Little Gem" was often employed in the Newfoundland trade. On February 9, 1878, while en route from Grimsby to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the vessel was run down seven miles east of Scarborough by the vessel "Dunedin". The crew survived, but the vessel was lost.
