The vessel was owned by William Penny in 1875 and E Roberts the following year, both also of Brixham. The "Little Gem" was often employed in the Newfoundland trade. On February 9, 1878, while en route from Grimsby to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the vessel was run down seven miles east of Scarborough by the vessel "Dunedin".
