Biography/Admin History: The U.S.A.T. "Edmund B. Alexander" arrived at St. John's on January 29, 1941 with the first American troops to occupy wartime Newfoundland. Accommodations were not yet available at Pepperrell Air Force Base (it was still under construction) so personnel remained onboard until May 1941 when a temporary camp, named "Camp Alexander", was erected.
