Biography/Admin History: The barquentine "Blue & White", official number 58803, gross tonnage 170, was built 1875 at Kingston, Elgin, Scotland and registered at Dumfries to James Bell of Kirkcudbright. By 1885 Bell had moved the vessel's registration to Ayr, which was also then listed as his place of residence. The "Blue & White" was heavily involved in the Newfoundland trade, having been chartered by Harbour Grace firms to transport saltfish to Mediterranean markets. The vessel was considered to be very fast, once making the trip from Indian Tickle, Labrador to Patras, Greece in what was then a record time of 24 days. However it may have made its last voyage circa 1883 and, by 1889, had disappeared from the registry.
