William Taylor in command 1875." | Image No.: | PF-008.105 | Image Location: | Box10/pf008_105.jpeg | Physical Description: | 1 slide : col. ; 35 mm | Biography/Admin History: | The brig "Thomas Ridley", official number 10534, gross tonnage 164, was built in 1852 at Carbonear, Newfoundland by Michael Kearney in the shipyard of merchant John Rorke, and named after one of the partners in the Liverpool firm of Harrison, Ridley and Company for whom Rorke had worked in his youth. Employed in the saltfish trade, the vessel transported Rorke’s fish to foreign markets and returned with salt and other cargoes. It was also regularly sent to the annual Newfoundland seal hunt. Throughout its 33 year history, the vessel had only two captains, Nicholas Hanrahan and William Taylor, both of Carbonear. The "Thomas Ridley" remained in Rorke's fleet until it was lost in a heavy gale while loading fish at Ice Tickles, Labrador, on October 13, 1885. | Collector: | Dr. Harry Roberts | Source Donor: | Dr. Harry Roberts, ca. 1981 | Collection Title: | Dr. Harry Roberts Slide Collection | Restrictions on Access: | Copyright expired | Copyright: | p | Physical Condition: | Good | Notes: | See "Newfoundland Fish Boxes: A Chronicle of the Fishery" by Dr. Harry D.
