Biography/Admin History: Newfoundland steam/sail vessel "Proteus" (built 1874 at Dundee). Official number 66839, 687 gross tons. Used in the seal fishery. Chartered by the U.S. Congress to transport the Arctic expedition of Adolphus Greeley to Ellesmere Island in 1881, and toreturn for the explorers in 1883. She was crushed in the ice, when the American army officer in charge of the expedition of 1883, overruled the objections of the Captain of the "Proteus", that it was too early in the season to continue northward. The crew was able to get off the vessel, and were picked up in Greenland. Lost July 23, 1883.
