Biography/Admin History: Jean Battinson Smith joined the Grenfell Labrador Medical Mission in October 1944 and was stationed as the nurse in charge at the Nursing Station in Flower's Cove, Newfoundland, which covered the Straits of Belle Isle. She stayed at that district for 3 years. In 1948, she became the Head Nurse at the Mission in North West River, Labrador, where she remained for 10 years. She spent her last two years with the Mission in Cartwright, Labrador. After leaving Labrador in 1959, the Queen's Institute of District Nursing awarded her a scholarship to take the Community Health Administration Course at the William Rathbone Staff College at Liverpool, England, in 1960. She remained in the United Kingdom and worked as a Health Visitor before retiring.
