Description: | Photograph by noted photographer James Vey of five sealing steam ships, including the "Greenland" and the "Hope," in the harbour at St. John's, Newfoundland. At the top of the original photograph is written the number of seals caught for the voyage caught by each vessel, and the net tons of seal oil and return per crew member; however, much of the information is illegible. |

Biography/Admin History: | S.S. "Greenland" - Built in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1872, wooden, 449 gross tons, official number 65085, registered at Montreal in 1872, owned by the Canada & Newfoundland Sealing & Fishing Co., Montreal. Caught fire and sank in 1884 but was refloated and repaired. In 1898 the "Greenland" met with more misfortune when 48 of its crew were lost on a sealing voyage. The vessel was finally destroyed by ice, 1907. |
