| Biography/Admin History: | The American oil rig, "Ocean Ranger", official number 615641, 14913 gross registered tonnage, was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan in 1976, owned by Ocean Drilling and Exploration Company, Inc. (ODECO) and registered at New Orleans, LA. It had drilled off the coasts of Alaska, New Jersey, and Ireland before moving to the Grand Banks to drill the Hibernia field in November 1980. On 14 February 1982, a strong winter storm moved into the Grand Banks, bringing with it hurricane force winds and high waves. By the early morning hours of 15 February 1982, the Ocean Ranger began listing before finally capsizing and sinking. Of the 84 crew members on board, 56 were Newfoundlanders. There were no survivors. |
