Biography/Admin History: When the "Edmund B. Alexander" arrived at St. John's in January 1941 with the first American troops to occupy wartime Newfoundland, accommodations were not yet available at Fort Pepperrell (it was still under construction) so personnel remained onboard until May 1941 when a temporary camp was erected. That camp was Camp Alexander, located on Carpasian Farm Road, and named after the U.S.A.T. "Edmund B. Alexander" troop ship.
