Forrester, Simon-Ship Perseverance, often made irregular voyages, seldom going or coming direct from Salem, Phillips (VB 1800, 355) says (and in intro) not a "Salem man"
Forrestor was born in Scotland and emigrated to Salem at about the age of nineteen, supposedly in the employ of Captain Daniel Hathorne. Forrestor became a captain and made his fortune as a privateer in the Revolution. In 1776 he married Hathorne's daughter Rachel. After the Revolution he retired from the sea, becoming a merchant and ship owner. Phillips said of Forrester, that he was not a true "Salem man" because his ships often sailed other ports. The Perseverance, often made irregular voyages, seldom going or coming direct from Salem. She was among the dozen or so ships Forrestor owned between 1776 and 1805. Nevertheless, he bought a house on Derby street, two doors down from Benjamin Crowninshield and an adjoining wharf in 1791 where he lived until his death. Phillips S&I p. 83ff |
