Objectives
Core Rotations
Ambulatory
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to function as an attending in the ambulatory setting. This will include ensuring adequate follow-up post discharge from acute care, longitudinally managing chronic medical comorbidities, and conducting comprehensive general internal medicine assessments of patients referred by non-medical specialties.
Community
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to function as an attending in the community setting. This involves caring for acute care patients in a non-teaching setting, stabilizing critical patients for transfer as required, and managing a diverse clinical practice with wide scope of practice including general medicine consultations and diagnostics.
Consults - Emergency
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to function as an attending in assessing patients referred from the emergency department for admission to acute care including referral to critical care services.
Consults - General Internal Medicine
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to function as an attending in assessing patients referred by all specialities for a variety of clinical conditions. The patient population will be diverse and often with multiple comorbidities, acute and chronic. The opportunity exist also to arrange follow-up through the individual's longitudinal clinic.
Consults - Perioperative
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to function as an attending in perioperative general internal medicine, including pre-operative assessments and optimization, and perioperative monitoring and optimization. The option exists to combine this with the general internal medicine consultation rotation for a longitudinal experience. In the community clinical experiences there will be a significant focus on perioperative management of patients.
General Medicine OPD Diagnostics
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to conduct and interpret general medicine diagnostics including stress tests and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
Intensive Care
This rotation will focus specifically on solidifying the skills necessary to serve as the initial treating physician for critically ill patients, including those suffering from common medical emergencies such as sepsis, hemodynamic instability, and acute kidney injury requiring dialysis. This will include stabilizing critically ill patients and accurately assessing need for transfer to the care of an intensivist.

Junior Attending
This rotation provides clinical experiences that will aid in the transition to practice. The experience brings together skills obtained in management of the patient, developing goals of care, communicating with the patient, the family and the family physician and setting the stage for appropriate follow-up and access to additional service.
Obstetrics
This rotation is offered through the GIM program of the University of Alberta. The skills obtained can be applied to the acute and chronic conditions seen in the NL obstetrical population which will, given the distribution of obstetrical services may require referral to a high risk centre.
