BUSI 3630 - New Venture Creation

Prerequisites: 45 credit hours from ANY major

This course covers the business creation process from the idea conception stage to the launch stage. Students will learn how to search for, screen and evaluate business opportunities, and to plan and assemble the required resources for a successful business start-up. The course gives students an understanding of the start-up process and its intended result, the creation of a robust new venture. Under supervision, students will exercise creativity, rigour, and independence as they work through their selected start-up route with a level of quality that reflects the needs of the current business environment and investment community.

BUSI 6610 - Small Enterprise & Regional Development

In this course we will examine community-informed, place-based economic develpoment. In particular, we will look at the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the perspective of regional Opportunity Management (OM) systems. We will study how regional development approaches impact SMEs as well as the role of SMEs play in these approaches. Our focus will be primarily on the exploitation of opportunities emerging from the develpoment, retention/stabilization, growth, and attraction of small and medium-sized enterprises. We will develop a strong theoretical understanding of key community economic develpoment (CED) concepts and, where possible, we will demonstrate the application of these concepts via local examples.
