SUBJECT: Public lecture: Oil Lives

DATE: Aug. 31

In the opening keynote lecture for Petrocultures 2016: The Offshore, Dr. Barbara Neis will address how increasing uncertainty over oil-driven job markets poses challenges for workers and local communities alike.

Petrocultures 2016: The Offshore is an international conference hosted by Memorial University running Aug. 31- Sept. 3.

The lecture will take place on the St. John’s campus in the Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation, room IIC-2001, on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m.

This lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception. It presents an opportunity to learn about and discuss employment, mobility and the oil industry — topics that affect Canadians coast-to-coast.

Dr. Neis is a University Research Professor at Memorial, a former Trudeau Fellow and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her research in the sociology of work, occupational health and safety, gender and society, and maritime sociology has made her a recognized and respected name in policy development and public engagement with rural communities.

Parking is available in lot 15B.

Petrocultures 2016 is supported by Memorial University, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, The Rooms, the Johnson GEO CENTRE and the Canada Research Chair in Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta.
