The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland will host a delegation of Brazilian students from the Newfoundland International Student Education Program (NISEP) tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 22.
The students will participate in a day-long Youth Oceans Conference (YOC), which aims to initiate, guide and support the engagement of youth and community in all aspects of the marine environment with respect to sustainability, innovation and leadership.
The conference takes place at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus beginning at 9 a.m. Members of the media are invited to attend.
Throughout the day, students will take part in activities including squid dissections, taste testing, boat building, remotely operated vehicle building and testing, and lamp building. YOC is focused on increasing awareness about marine sustainability and offering engaging and educational activities in marine innovation and youth leadership.
The student delegation is visiting from the state of Pernambuco in Brazil. The students are part of a scholarship program, titled Win the World, which is sponsored by the state government as a way for students to have the opportunity to study in an English-speaking country for a semester.
