SUBJECT: Celebrate Memorial activities during Nov. 4-8

From Nov. 1-16, Memorial will host a series of celebration activities designed to affirm the university's strong ties with the community of Newfoundland and Labrador. Celebrate Memorial's two-week schedule is chock full of events for members of the university community and the public. With lectures, awards ceremonies and public events at both the St. John's and the Grenfell College campuses, the celebration is designed so that there is something for everyone. Please see some of this week's scheduled events noted below. Some events are open to the public and media agencies are also welcome to send representatives.

Tuesday, Nov. 5 - Volunteer Fair
Volunteers are a key component in any community. Memorial's St. John's campus will be hosting a campus Volunteer Fair on Tuesday, Nov 5. Information will be available about different sectors where volunteers are needed. All are welcome.

Tuesday, Nov. 5 - Times for the Making lecture: Gerry Rogers
As part of the Times for the Making lecture series, Gerry Rogers, producer of the film My Left Breast, will be speaking on campus. Admission is free, and everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday, Nov. 6 - President's Luncheon Address to St. John's Board of Trade: Memorial University - Shaping the Future
From 12:30-2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, President Axel Meisen will present highlights of the 2001-02 year at Memorial, and outline the upcoming challenges and opportunities facing the province's only university. Tickets are $35 for members and $45 for non-members, and are available from the St. John's Board of Trade.

Thursday, November 7 - Friday, November 8 - Showcase Memorial Pavilion (Career Expo: St. John's Convention Centre)
The St. John's Convention Centre will be site of the Showcase Memorial Pavilion during Career Expo on Thursday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 8. Check out one of our many enlightening display booths, including the Oceans Sciences Centre and the Marine Institute displays. Memorial will also be offering guided tours of the St. John's campus, self-guided tours (maps provided), or guided tours of the Marine Institute. Thursday, Nov. 7 - Remembrance Ceremony
Memorial University is aptly named as a way to remember those who fought in the first and second world wars. Each year a Remembrance Ceremony is held to reflect on the lives lost.

Thursday, Nov. 7 - Annual Scholarship Ceremony
Winners of entrance scholarships to Memorial will be recognized and honoured by the university community during a special luncheon. This event is by invitation only; media agencies can contact Ivan Muzychka, 737-8665 to arrange access.

Thursday, Nov. 7 - Hon. Dr. A.M. House Lecture on Literacy - Reading in an Age of Information
Dr. John Willinsky, Professor of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia will give a lecture entitled Reading in an Age of Information. All are welcome to attend his address, which also serves as the opening keynote for the conference of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistics Association.
