A.I. Herzen State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg

Memorial University's agreement with the A.I. Herzen State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg was signed in August 1991, augmented in 1993 and ratified again in May 2000.

This agreement enables our students to study at A.I. Herzen University for a period of one term to two years in order to take courses there to fulfill the requirement for the Russian Major at Memorial.

The A.I. Herzen State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg is one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Russia. It maintains connections with universities throughout the world and students from well-respected universities in Europe and North America take study terms there.

Students who have completed at least two years of study of the Russian language at Memorial are eligible to apply.

Our students are guaranteed accommodation at the university residence (which is located on the University campus just minutes from Nevsky Prospekt, the main street in St. Petersburg, the Hermitage, Russian Museum and major theatres and concert halls.) Alternatively, your academic advisors will help you to find an apartment which suits your budget.

Over the past decade several students have taken advantage of this unique opportunity to study in Russia, while completing the requirements for their Russian specialization at Memorial.

For more details regarding the costs and feasibility, make an appointment to speak with the Coordinator of the Russian Programmes.

Moscow: Russian State Fellowship Programme

The government of the Russian Federation offers five full fellowships to Canadian students who have completed their B.A. and wish to study or conduct research for a year (or more) in Russia. The scholarship covers everything with the exception of travel to and from Russia.

In Russia, this programme is administered by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. The competition in Canada is administered by the International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).

For further information concerning eligibility and terms of the competition consult the ICCS web site: www.scholarships-bourses-ca.org or consult the Coordinator of the Russia Programmes.

This fellowship is available to Memorial's students; so far three of our students have been awarded this scholarship and in fall 2002 two travelled to study in Moscow.
