Stone
A variety of stone artifacts were excavated from House 3. Eight soapstone fragments were recovered representing at least two different lamps and four different pots. The presence of soapstone pots suggests that food was being prepared in a traditional manner. Similarly, the soapstone lamps indicate that the house was being lit and heated in a traditional fashion using sea mammal oil. Pyrite cobbles found in the house were collected in other regions of Labrador by the occupants and used as strike-a-lights. The 30 pieces of mica found would have been used by the Inuit as windows and mirrors. Gunflint and a single whetstone were also recovered. In addition, flint knapping debitage and a small number of finished tools were also recovered. These items are likely the result of an earlier Recent Indian occupation and were embedded into the sod that was used for the house construction. |
