Government Scholarships

Currently (2019) there are two scholarships offered by Global Affairs Canada (Government of Canada) and administered through the Canadian Bureau of International Education. 

Emerging Leaders of the Americas Program (ELAP)

For students from Latin America and the Carribean the ELAP scholarship may be right for you. The details for the scholarship includee:

  • Your university must have a formal exchange agreement with Memorial University of Newfoundland
  • You must be from one of the eligible countries (Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
    Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
    North America: Mexico; or
    South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.)
  • You must be nominated by your home university for exchange
  • You must submit all required documentation by the deadline (March 17th, 2022). Please note that this deadline is different than that which is posted on the scholarship website. This is because Memorial University must apply on your behalf. There is no possibility of late submissions. 
  • Scholarship is valued at $7200 CAD (4-month, undergraduate study) $9700 for graduate or PhD for 6-month research opportunities. 
  • Full details and application for the ELAP scholarship can be accessed at the Government of Canada's website. 

To apply:

  1. Complete the nomination form for exchange and visiting students
  2. Send the checklist form and the supplemental documents required to chibbs@mun.ca
  3. Refer to Global Affairs Canada's official scholarships page for all the detailed information
  4. For academic, course-based scholarship applications, a measure of English proficiency will be required.  

Please note that scholarships cannot be processed without a completed scholarship checklist form.

If you are a successful recipient of the scholarship, the Internationalization Office will follow-up with the exchange application for Memorial University (a separate process).

Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED)

For students from from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) scholarship may be right for you. The details for the scholarship includee:

  • Your university must have a formal exchange agreement with Memorial University of Newfoundland
  • You must be from one of the eligible countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos (Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR)), Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam).
  • You must be nominated by your home university for exchange
  • You must submit all required documentation by the deadline (February 28th, 2022). Please note that this deadline is different than that which is posted on the scholarship website. This is because I must apply on your behalf and I cannot submit all of the documentation on the final day of eligibility. There is no possibility of late submissions. 
  • Scholarship is valued at $8,200 CAD (4-month study) $11,100 for graduate or PhD for 6-month research opportunities. 
  • Full details and application for the SEED scholarship can be accessed at the Government of Canada's website. 

Please submit nominations via the online nomination form for visiting and exchange students.

For the application process, all of these documents should be submitted to chibbs@mun.ca. Please refer to the scholarship page for application details:

  1. Proof of citizenship
  2. Proof of full-time enrolment
  3. Letter of intent from the candidate, including a reference to how their program of study ties into the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 (very important). 
  4. Letter of support from the home institution
  5. Letter of invitation from the Canadian supervisor (research-based exchange)
  6. Signed copy of Memorandum of Understanding or Agreement with the partner institution
  7. Privacy Notice Statement
  8. Proof of English Proficiency - TOEFL of 79, IELTS 6.5 or demonstrable equivalent 

If your are a successful recipient of the scholarship, the Internationalization Office will follow-up with the exchange application for Memorial University (a separate process).
