The Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER) is in an exciting period of expansion and invites applications for a Research Scientist position(s) in marine and/or fisheries ecosystems. Requirements for this position include a Ph.D. marine ecology, biological oceanography, fisheries science or a closely related discipline with related experience in the North Atlantic or similar marine ecosystems. 


To complement and extend existing research capabilities, CFER is seeking scientists that have expertise in one or several of the following fields: 


  1. Biological Oceanography (Marine Productivity)
  2. Marine Invertebrate Ecology (Commercial Species)
  3. Quantitative Fisheries Stock Assessment
  4. Coastal Ecology            

Successful applicants will be required to develop a dynamic, internationally recognized and grant supported research program focusing largely on Atlantic or Arctic marine ecosystems, have excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to supervise graduate students. The ability to work collaboratively with industry, fish harvesters, academic colleagues, and government agencies is also important.


CFER was created in 2010 with a mandate to conduct research and training on fisheries science of the North Atlantic, the Canadian Arctic and other similar ecosystems internationally. CFER has built a dynamic team of research scientists and technical personnel with varying specialties and is now the largest university-based capture fisheries research group in Canada. CFER supports graduate programs in fisheries science and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows play key roles in CFER research. Please go to www.mi.mun.ca/cfer for additional information.
