MacEdward Leach and the Songs of Atlantic Canada

Richard and Alfred Moores of Pouch Cove

Richard and Alfred Moores were not related to each other, but did live next door to each other. Alfred was the son of Alfred Moores, the hero of the Water Witch shipwreck and rescue narrated in song and story. Alfred's death took place in 1956; Richard's in 1975. Other than this, we have been able to find out little about the Moores.

As often happened, Leach wrote their last name down inaccurately as "Morse," and this error has caused confusion over the years. Leach collected "The Song of the Water Witch" from Richard, while Alfred told him the story.

We would like to thank Darren Moores for providing most of the biographical information about the Moores.
