MacEdward Leach and the Songs of Atlantic Canada

Martin Reddigan of Calvert

Martin Joseph Reddigan was known most commonly as "Mart" and this may well have been misheard by Leach or the tape transcriber as "Mark." Mart was born on the 12th of December in 1903 and married Mary-Anne Frances Carey in 1930. "Anne," as she was known, was born on September 8, 1906 and died on April 17, 1990. Mart passed away on January 29, 1980 of heart disease.

In his fieldbooks, Leach referred to Martin as "Mark," "M." and, in one instance, "M. Sullivan." The voices are the same and hence we are attributing all the songs, whether sung by Mark, M., or Martin, to Martin. He gave Leach "The Drunken Captain," "Hard Times," "Fifteen Men Lost on George's Banks," "Lumberman's Alphabet," "Sailor's Alphabet," and "The Boys of Newfoundland."
