George MacAskill

George MacAskill was born and raised in the community of Englishtown, at the southern tip of the North Shore, Cape Breton. Giant MacAskill, who came to Englishtown from the Island of Berneray, was George's uncle. Like many of his relatives and forerunners in Berneray, George was a well-respected poet. His best known composition is "Òran do Shep (Song to Shep)," which praises the faithfulness and intelligence of his dog, Shep. It was recorded in the 70s by the North Shore Gaelic Singers.
