MacEdward Leach and the Songs of Atlantic Canada

Charles Dawe of Flatrock

By 1921 Charles Dawe was a widower. He had five children (daughters, Rita, Theresa Mary, and Isobel; and sons, Arthur and William). In his field notes, Leach spelled the name, "Charles Daw." Charles died in 1958.

From Charles, Leach collected the recitation "The Flemings of Torbay" and the song "Harkin's Voyage." He is also probably the "unidentified male informant" who gave Leach the recitation "Hawco the Hero."

We would like to acknowledge Nick Dawe for correcting some of the information about Charles Dawe's family.
