Campus Master Plan Overview

In 2007, a Campus Master Plan update was issued for Memorial University’s St. John’s campus. Since that time, a number of studies, plans, and projects have been completed, guided by that plan. In recent years, Memorial University has undertaken an extensive period of consultation, planning, and priority setting resulting in the adoption of three frameworks in the primary areas of university activity: teaching and learning, research, and public engagement. With this in mind, the university is now focusing on developing an overarching Campus Master Plan that encompasses these frameworks and reflects the university's vision, mission, and values

Why a Campus Master Plan?

The Campus Master Plan is a decision-making tool that is continuously revised to answer the challenges of a thriving and evolving campus. The university’s buildings and facilities are meant to not just allow the university community to complete its day-to-day tasks, but to fulfill a broad range of aspirations for many years to come.

This includes being responsive to:

  • changes in the way academic departments teach students,
  • the shrinking physical footprint of university campuses,
  • continually evolving technologies,
  • the impact of climate change,
  • shifting provincial demographic, and
  • mounting financial challenges.

In addition to the St. John’s Campus, Memorial’s footprint in this region also includes a number of offsite locations, such as the Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay and the Signal Hill Campus. The Signal Hill Campus includes the Johnson Geo Centre (gifted to the university in 2019), the Emera Innovation Exchange and graduate student accommodations. There is an increased need to integrate these locations with the overall vision of the university.

The Campus Master Plan will help transform the university's integrated planning efforts into a tangible and exciting vision meant to foster broad-based support and leverage resources to make this vision a reality.
