Conversation Partner Program

Program description

The ESL Conversation Partner Program (ESL CPP) provides international students with the opportunity to meet virtually (e-meet) with fluent English speakers to practice their English speaking skills and develop fluency. 10 Hours of conversation practice are delivered in 1-hour virtual meetings each week.

Conversation partners improve their English speaking and listening skills with regular, supported practice, and they are able to e-meet someone from a different background and become friends over the course of the semester. They get to share their culture and learn how to adjust to this new culture. Each Conversation Partner must complete a time log at the end of each meeting with their Conversation Partner Volunteer.

Conversation partner volunteers are matched with international students, and e-meet them once a week at a mutually convenient time in order to talk, listen and learn about another culture. Each Conversation Partner Volunteer must complete a time log at the end of each meeting with their Conversation Partner.

All ESL CPP participants are taken through orientation and training before being matched with a partner. Additional guidance and resources are provided throughout the program to support language acquisition and professional development. All ESL CPP participants are encouraged to provide evaluation feedback mid-cohort and at the end of the program, to support the continued improvement of the program delivery.

ESL virtual social events include the weekly Conversation Party, each week you will have the opportunity to increase your conversation time, learn about new cultures, and make new friends. You can join the ESL Memorial Slack Channel for more information.

Continuing in the Winter 2021 semester, we will be partnering with the Internationalization Office’s MUN Mentors Program to host virtual social events for both the ESL Programs and the MUN Mentors Program participants. Click here for more information on the MUN Mentors Program.
