Register as a Conversation Partner Volunteer.
MUN's international students can improve their English speaking and listening skills with regular, supported practice. Through the Conversation Partner Program, they are matched with Conversation Partner Volunteers from different backgrounds and will likely become friends over the course of the semester. Conversation Partners also get to share their culture and learn how to adjust to this new Canadian culture, and to living and studying in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
Conversation Partners and Conversation Partner Volunteers meet once a week at a mutually convenient time to talk, listen and learn about each other’s culture. Activities that develop dialogues and cultural exchange are encouraged.
To be a Conversation Partner Volunteer, you should be:
- a fluent English-speaker
- a MUN undergraduate or graduate student
- available to meet once or twice a week, for about one hour with a Conversation Partner
- friendly and open to meeting new people
- respectful of different cultures and communication styles
- able to work independently and manage time efficiently
"I love meeting people from around the world and listening to their stories. It's extremely rewarding when students learn new words or different ways to express themselves."
- Mayra (Spring 2020)
"My conversation partner and I have become great friends - we have even spent time together with our loved ones. I think that we have built a friendship that will last beyond this summer."
-Sabrina (Spring 2020)
