IMPORTANT:

Instructions on how to pay your ESL Deposit and ESL Program fee + other semester fees are available here

Deadlines for Payments
  • Deadline to pay the ESL deposit: 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester.

We encourage students to pay the ESL deposit as soon as possible (instead of waiting until the deadline), to avoid any delays associated with international payments.

  • Deadline to pay all fees (ESL Tuition fee + other semester fees): fees need to be paid before the first day of the semester.

Students who have not paid all fees prior to the first day of the semester, will not be permitted to start the ESL program until all fees are paid.

We encourage students to pay the ESL Program fee + other semester fees as soon as possible, (instead of waiting until the deadline), to avoid any delays associated with international payments. Payments can typically take 3-10 days to appear in a student's account (depending on what method of payment was used and what country the payment originated from). The payment needs to be in the student's account at Memorial University’s Cashier’s Office** by the first day of the semester, or the student will not be permitted to start the ESL program until all fees are paid.

    ** What is a student's account at Memorial University's Cashier’s Office?
All students enrolled at Memorial University are set up with an account at the Cashier’s Office. When a student sends money to Memorial University for tuition and other fees, the Cashier’s Office receives the money and puts it in the student’s account. When ESL registers students into the ESL Program, the tuition and other semester fees are charged to the student’s account and that amount of money is taken out of the student’s account at the Cashier’s Office.

Please note:

  • The Recreation Fee ($62.16) is suspended for Fall 2020 due to COVID-19.

  • Textbooks are not covered under the cost of tuition. Students can purchase their textbooks from the MUN Bookstore.

Withdrawals from the ESL Programs

Students can withdraw from the Intensive English Program and Intensive Bridge Program by submitting the ESL Withdrawal Form to esl@mun.ca

A withdrawal occurs when:

1. You are attending one of our ESL Programs and decide to withdraw from it.

OR

2. You have been accepted into one of our ESL Programs, have not attended ESL Orientation and classes yet, and decide to withdraw from the program.

Please note:

  • A withdrawal is not official until the English as a Second Language Programs administrative staff has received official notification and certified the changes.

  • Ceasing to attend classes, or informing an instructor of the intent to withdraw, does not constitute an official withdrawal.

  • Students who have been accepted for a semester and are no-shows (do not attend the ESL Orientation), are deemed to have withdrawn from the ESL Programs even if they have not completed a withdrawal form. If these students decide to join the ESL Programs in another semester, they will have to submit a re-admission form (and pay the ESL application fee and MUNTEL registration fee).

Deadlines for Refunds

The ESL Application Fee, the MUNTEL Registration Fee, and the ESL Deposit* are non-refundable.

* The ESL deposit is refundable only in the event of a study permit refusal (only for in person classes), and only if proof of student permit refusal is submitted by the first day of classes of the semester for which the deposit was paid for. Proof of study permit refusal needs to be submitted to the ESL Financial Officer.
As a study permit is not needed for our ESL remote classes (Spring 2021), the ESL deposit will not be refunded in case of study permit refusal.

ESL Tuition Fee

  • If you withdraw at least 30 days prior to the program start date, you will receive a full reversal of the ESL Tuition Fee.

  • If you withdraw within the first two weeks of the program start date, you will receive a 75% reversal of the ESL Tuition Fee.

  • If you withdraw after the first two weeks of the program start date, you will not be eligible for a reversal of fees.

Please note:

All refunds are the responsibility of the Cashier's Office. The Cashier's Office will respond to your questions regarding your refund. Click here to get in contact with the Cashier's Office. If you are required to pay a deposit towards your first year of tuition for your visa application, you must include your full tuition and other mandatory fees in your estimate. Fees may change without notice.

Deferrals

Applications to the ESL Programs may be deferred to the following semester, one time only, but at the discretion of the English as a Second Language Programs. We may offer to defer an application in circumstances where an application error was made or when it is considered in the best interest of the applicant.

To request an application deferral, you must contact the English as a Second Language Programs (esl@mun.ca). The deadline for application deferrals is the first day of the semester for which you originally applied. In your request to defer email, include:

  1. your full name;
  2. your student number;
  3. an explanation of your extenuating circumstance.

Please note:
- MUNTEL scores are valid for one year. Students who request a deferral may need to re-take MUNTEL and pay another MUNTEL fee if their score is no longer valid.
- The ESL Deposit is non-refundable and is meant to save a spot in the program for the semester for which it was originally paid. It is not transferable to another semester.
