Graduate of 3-Week Summer Program (Summer 2019), and Intensive Bridge Program, Level 7 (Fall 2019)
Kaoru is an alumna of our 3-Week Summer Program and our Intensive Bridge Program. She came to MUN with other students from the University of Nagasaki in August of 2019, to participate in the 3-Week Summer Program. After completing this program, Kaoru enrolled in our Intensive Bridge Program in the Fall of 2019. See below for her thoughts on studying ESL at MUN.
I began studying with ESL at Memorial in August 2019. I participated in the English Language Summer Program with 19 other Japanese university students. The first three weeks were perfect to get to know St. John’s and to get accustomed to the new environment. We went around almost all of the popular tourist spots in St. John’s and tried activities and delicious foods that I have never experienced in Japan. I still vividly remember that I was amazed how big and beautiful this world is when we were looking up at the sky on Signal Hill.
Thanks to the program, my nervousness toward studying abroad was gone and I could start the ESL bridge program feeling confident. I learned a lot in ESL to be a successful university student. However, some aspects were more difficult than I expected because I had to face the reality that my English was not strong enough to study at the university. In these situations, my friends and teachers always supported me to stay motivated. Without these supports, I would have never been able to pass the ESL program.
Currently I am an undergraduate student studying Linguistics at MUN. Although I still have some difficulties with English, what I have learned during the ESL program helps me try my best.
Lastly, I will never regret that I chose St. John’s and Memorial University as my study abroad destination. I am very lucky to spend one portion of my life here surrounded by people who have warm hearts and great senses of humour, beautiful nature and colourful houses!
