Student Work Placement Program (SWPP)

The Student Work Placement Program (SWPP) gives post-secondary students across Canada paid work experience related to their field of study.

How Much Could You Receive?
  • up to $5,000 for every student you hire through the program
  • up to $7,000 for every student you hire that is in their first year or is from an under-represented group including women in STEM, persons with disabilities, newcomers and Indigenous students

Canada Summer Jobs

Canada Summer Jobs is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy

Program objectives include:
  • providing quality work experiences for youth
  • responding to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers
  • providing opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills

The program provides wage subsidies to employers from not-for-profit organizations, the public-sector, and private sector organizations with 50 or fewer full-time employees, to create quality summer work experiences for young people aged 15 to 30 years. 

Not-for-profit employers are eligible to receive funding for up to 100% of the provincial or territorial minimum hourly wage. Public and private sector employers are eligible to receive funding for up to 50% of the provincial or territorial minimum hourly wage.

Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy

If you are a Canadian business that has been affected by COVID-19, you may be eligible for a subsidy of 75% of employee wages for up to 24 weeks, retroactive from March 15, 2020, to August 29, 2020.

Eligibility:
  • be an eligible employer
  • have experienced an eligible reduction in revenue, and
  • have had a CRA payroll account on March 15, 2020

Project Learning Tree Canada

This programs seeks to "inspire leadership in forest stewardship, foster a passion for science-based research and education, and help youth gain skills and experience so they can transition successfully into the labour market."

Eligibility
  • Green Jobs are considered positions that contribute positively to increasing sustainability in the forest, conservation and parks sectors. Positions may have a strong outdoor component and have a focus on resource management, conservation, and/or environmental education.
  • The job must be a new job, indicating that the funding is increasing the capacity of your organization to hire more youth.
  • The duration of the work experience must be from a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 16 weeks (some exceptions apply).
  • Work experience must take place in Canada.

Mitacs Accelerate Program

Both academic institutions and businesses (profit and not-for-profit) can use this funding to solve research challenges with "academic expertise, leveraged funding, and one-to-one support from Mitacs." Internships start at four months and financial contribution starts at $7,500. 

Eligibility
  • Eligible for-profit corporations in Canada and not-for-profit corporations in Canada
  • For-profit businesses operating outside Canada
  • Not-for-profit corporation eligibility and project economic orientation must be assessed prior to proposal submission
  • Available for all sectors
  • Must hire full-time students at all Canadian colleges and full-time grad students at all Canadian universities for the internships

SD Tech Fund

Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is "a foundation created by the Government of Canada to support Canadian companies with the potential to become world leaders in their efforts to develop and demonstrate new environmental technologies that address climate change, clean air, clean water and clean soil."

Fund highlights:
  • On average 33% (up to 40%) of eligible projects costs
  • The average contribution is $3 million, with funds disbursed in five years or less.
  • 25% of the eligible costs must be funded through private sector contributions (including in-kind).
  • Funding from all levels of government must not surpass 75% of eligible costs.
  • At least 50% of eligible project costs must be incurred in Canada.
