Get a copy of the free Netscape Composer software: look under Help on the menu bar above, choose Software Updates. Download the software, install it as instructed. This gives you Navigator to surf the web, and Composer to edit web pages.
You will probably find it easier to modify an existing webpage than to start from scratch. In the exercises on the following pages, begin by saving each page: File / Save As / Practice_webpage.htm
Now, choose File / Open Page & either type the name of the file you want to edit, or Choose File by clicking on the file in the appropriate folder. Click the Composer button to go to editing mode. You can also edite a webpage directly from the web with the File / Edit Page option in Composer.
Begin by changing the appearance of a random bit of text. The Formatting Bar gives you control over font, size, colour, bold, italics, & underlining, in the usual manner as word processors: highlight the text with the cursor & choose the appropriate format with the button. Additional options are available under 'Format': note particularly that 'Format'/'Style' gives you options for subscript and superscript characters. You can also construct Tables (learn how by trial & error), or insert Horizontal Lines with the H. Line command. There are other options available: explore & experiment!
I recommend either the default Variable Width font (which read well up close on a computer screen) or Arial (which displays well at a distance in a classroom) [the base font for this page is Arial].
To show a double-stranded DNA sequence, where complementary DNA letters must align exactly, use the Fixed Width font, in which ACGT all take up the same amount of space. For example,
A C G T A C G T
T G C A T G C A
