Neotenic Salamanders of eastern North America

    Several related genera of salamanders have evolved sexually mature, cave-dwelling forms that are permanently aquatic: note the retention of gills in Typhlomulge and Gyrinophilus. Non-metamorphosing Eurycea salamanders resemble the juvenile forms of blind cave salamanders of the genus Typhlotriton.
