Bass Island complex

Island distribution of Lake Erie water snakes (Nerodia (Natrix) sipedon)

Pelee Island is the southernmost point of land in Canada, except for the much smaller Middle Island. The Bass Island complex is in US waters  All of the islands have a dark slate composition, in contrast to the sandy beaches of the US and Canadian mainlands. Water snakes on the US and Canadian mainland are almost exclusively banded, whereas those on the islands are predominantly unbanded..

Pelee Island is home to a large number of species found no where else in Canada, many of which are listed under the Species At Risk Act (SARA) as Endangered or Threatened with extinction.
