Stratigraphic ranges of Plio-Pleistocene Hominid species

Broken bars indicate the range of fossil material tentatively assigned to the species indicated. Assignment of material to the species Homo habilis is controversial. The robust australopithecines, A. boisei and A. robustus, may constitute a single species, distinct from the gracile africanus. Note the overlap of Australopithecus and Homo between 1.5 ~ 2.5 MYBP. Neanderthals are usually classified as Homo sapiens neanderthalensis.
