Griffith's Transformation Experiment

    A mixture of heated-killed virulent bacteria and avirulent bacteria regenerated live virulent bacteria. The avirulent bacteria had been "transformed" by something in the heated-killed bacteria. Further, this something was passed on to subsequent generations of bacteria:  the transformation was inherited. The nature of the transforming substance was unknown.
