Reconstruction of life following the "Cambrian explosion"

Creatures identified from the Burgess Shale of British Colubmia include forms belonging to a variety of extinct phyla with uncertain affinities to contemporary forms. The yellow creature in the upper left hand corner is the first known chordate, Pikaia.
