Geckos of the genus Aristelliger
show indeterminate growth, meaning they
continue to increase in size with age. Lamellar scales on
their toe pads function as suction cups that allow them to climb
vertical surfaces (such as glass windows); counts on individuals
are invariant from birth. As animals increase in length with age
(bottom to top), there is a shift in survivors from a birth cohort
towards those with a higher count of lamellae (on the 4th toe).
This may indicate a selective advantage of a more efficient toe
pad.
