Annie Darwin (1841 - 1851)
Annie Darwin was Charles and Emma's second child and first
daughter. Charles admitted that she was his was favorite of
all his children. Her death at age ten from typhoid-like fever
extinguished any remaining conventional theistic feelings in
her father.
The right-hand photo is a still from the
2009 film, "Creation,"
with Paul Bettany as Darwin and Martha West as Annie. The role
of Emma Darwin is played by Bettany's real-life wife, Jennifer
Connelly. The film takes many liberties with historic fact,
but effectively portrays the strong bond between father and
daughter.
