Ernst Mayr (1904 - 2005)

By early training an ornithologist, Harvard professor Ernst Mayr contributed to the systematics component of the Modern Synthesis in his "Systematics and the Origin of Species" (1942). His "Animal Species and Evolution" (1963) was regarded as the capstone of the Modern Synthesis, and was reviewed at the time as the greatest work on evolution since Darwin.
