Segment Number
The
formation of segment number begins with gap genes activating a set
of secondary A-P patterning genes called pair-rule genes. They encode
transcription factors of seven stripes.
Pair-rule
gene products combine in such a way to regulate the
transcription of the segment-polarity genes. These genes are expressed
in
offset patterns of 14 stripes which then form and define the individual
A-P
rows of cells within each segment.
