Changes in Course Offerings for Winter 2021 Semester

There are changes to our course offerings in the coming semester as a result of the announcement that teaching will take place remotely for the Winter 2021. Some courses will not be offered at all in the coming Winter semester and we have some new courses being offered.
We want to ensure that you progress successfully through your programs so we have increased the flexibility in degree and course requirements to accommodate the changes necessary for remote delivery of courses.

Information for COVID19 course changes 2020-2021How will the offering of Biochemistry 1600 in Winter affect you?
• This course cannot be used towards a Biochemistry or Nutrition major. It can only be used as a general science elective.
Course Description:BIOC 1600 Foods, Drugs, and Your Body examines the substances humans put into their bodies and the impact the substances have on cellular physiology and metabolism. With a special emphasis on current trends, the course introduces the concept of foods and drugs, how they are metabolised by the body, the social and political implications of foods and drugs, how they can influence overall health, and the sometimes grey areas between foods and drugs. How will changing the prerequisite requirement for Biochemistry 2201 affect you?
• Normally Chemistry 2400 would need to be completed prior to registering for Biochemistry 2201 but in Winter 2021 you can request to be signed into Biochemistry 2201 while doing Chemistry 2400 at the same time. (Approval will be on an individual basis, after discussion with the course coordinator, based on the student’s commitment to putting extra work into Bioc 2201 to make up for any deficits in chemistry and/or physics.)
• This should increase flexibility in scheduling your courses to offset changes in course offerings as a result of remote teaching for Winter 2021.

How will the absence of Biochemistry 3906 affect you?
• Biochemistry 3906 is normally a Winter course.
• It is a required course in the Honours in Biochemistry program and both the Major and Honours programs in Nutrition, including the Joint Honours in Nutrition and Behavioural Neuroscience.
• It is an optional biochemistry course in other biochemistry programs.
• If you need or wish to complete this course you can do so when it is next offered.
• If you are unable to do this course in your third year, it should be possible to complete in the fourth year of your program. This may require you taking a specified Biochemistry elective in Winter to ensure that you have space in your schedule for Biochemistry 3906 in your fourth year.

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4232 in Winter affect you?
• This course will count as a specified biochemistry elective in all Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition) programs.
• Biochemistry 3105 is a prerequisite for this course but third year Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition) students can request to be signed into the course without the prerequisite and the instructor will consider on a case by case basis.
Course Description: This course will examine the structure and function of cellular enzymes and receptors. The molecular basis of enzyme-catalyzed reactions and receptor-driven signalling, as well as the equations and constants used to describe these processes, will be discussed in detail. The concept of enzymes and receptors as pharmaceutical targets will be highlighted with specific examples.

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4242 in Spring affect you?
The offering of this course is dependent on the pandemic situation in Canada and the UK. Registration for the course will not open until a decision is made. Students interested in this course for Winter 2021 should have a back-up plan.

• This course will count as a specified biochemistry elective in Biochemistry(Nutrition) programs.
Course Description: This course will be offered at Memorial’s Harlow campus in the UK. It begins as an intensive two weeks of field trips to various sites near Harlow, including nutrition and food research institutes and food production facilities, to address the themes Farm to Fork Food Systems; Food, Nutrition and Health; and Modern Nutrition Research. (Biochemistry 2600 prerequisite).

How will switching semesters for Biochemistry 4300 & 4301 affect you?
• Both these courses are required in our Major and Honours in Nutrition programs and the Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) Joint Honours program. If completing them this year you should be doing Biochemistry 4300 in Fall and Biochemistry 4301 in Winter.
• These are like-for-like switches in terms of time slots, and should not cause scheduling issues for you.
