Research Statement

My research will focus on beetle (Coleoptera) biodiversity change over the last c.1500 years at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of L’Anse aux Meadows. This will be achieved through a survey of the extant local beetle fauna, combined with the analysis of insect fossils (Archaeoentomology) preserved in a peat monolith collected at the site in 2019. By comparing results of the modern beetle survey with subfossil taxa identified from peat subsamples dated through Bayesian modelling of radiocarbon data, it should be possible to examine how the various Indigenous peoples, as well as the short Norse occupation, and later Europeans settlers who lived at site influenced the local fauna, flora, and environment.
